Mumbai : City of Gold

They call Mumbai the City of Gold. Looking at these photos, do you doubt it?

Even a fisherman can cast his nets in a molten sea that ripples with golden highlights.

Can a cloud dim the splendour of the fiery sun for long? He will just burn his way through them.

Palm leaves can be the perfect frame for a masterpiece in shades of gold and gray.

And a homeward-bound bird can find his way guided by a golden path glimmering from sea to shore.

These photos were all taken on the same day this week.

  6. Isn't it typical, Kanak? That our obsession with gold(the metal, I mean) should find a reflection in the sky ... and sea. And isn't it also typical that I just have to be contrary and prefer silver (antique, of course) ;)
Yay! about the seeds. I'll be mailing you, okay? Thanks a ton!

  9. No sirree. Sorry, I love my country and learned just how much when I lived in Europe for over 10 years. I am here to stay-but thanks for asking! Besides, how could I ever move my garden there?;)

  10. Beautiful photos. The silhouttes of the palm tree fronds, the boats and the bird are what make these special.

  12. Watching your photos one gets an impression that the sea and sky over Mumbai are more beautiful than anywhere else in the world. Yes its a City of Gold inhabited by people with Golden hearts.

  13. Those are just gorgeous golden views. Took my breath away Sunita! :) The City of Gold indeed!

  14. I noticed the way the palm leaves looked good in the sky pics right away, and how different they are from my trees. Beautiful!

  15. I love this post, photos are truly golden!

  18. Good point, Tina ;)
Oh well, I guess you could always visit every once in a while.

  19. Tyra, can you spot that little flag he has placed to mark his nets? That is to give an indication to other boats, I guess. Its a very peaceful sight, watching them put out their nets. I wonder whether he realises that he is fishing in a golden sea?

  20. They look very feathery, dont they, Sue? But I love the trees in your part of the world too, you know. I love the way they change colour in such glorious shades.

  21. Hi Kim! I think I've thoroughly convinced my neighbours of my eccentricity by now. Frumpy, dumpy housewives in these parts dont go around toting cameras and clicking photos of the sky (of all things)!
    Do I care? Naaaah!

  22. Golden indeed. A magnificent series of well thought out captures. I especially like the fisherman.

  23. LOL Sunita,
I got together last night with two of my neighbor ladies who I don't see as often as they'd like to get together. They asked me what I've been doing with all the pictures I've been taking. I gave them the long version about blogging. :o)

  24. Aaah! It truly is golden. It's splendorous. It's glorious. t's splendid! [Need some help with adjectives here, anyone?]

I guess Fire's daughter and son (Suvarnaa and Suvarna) live there and that's why the City's called so!

  25. Amazing captures Sunita thanks for sharing these with us!!!! Those shots look just like South Florida!
I'd love to come and visit there someday.

  27. Maybe I'm biased but I think I would agree with you, Green Thumb :)

  28. Thank you, Gaelyn! What a lovely thing to say!
The fisherman... I wonder how he would feel if he knew he had become internationally 'famous' :)

  29. Sue, that must have been quite a session! So did you make new converts to the blogging cause?

  30. Eric, I'm sure you'll feel right at home here. I've had friends and family visiting Florida who couldn't believe that they were in the US. The weather, plants, etc. were so much like that of coastal India.
Imagine travelling all the way around the earth to find a place exactly like home!

  31. Thank you, Jan. I hope you'll be careful too. I keep reading about ice-storms on other blogs and they sound quite scary.

  32. Chandramouli, that really made me laugh :D
You know when I'm asked about Mumbai, I feel I really need the help of a thesaurus. I think I left that one out ... its also the City of extremes :)

  33. Thanks Lindab. I think I clicked about 20 - 30 photos before I got the bird in the frame too. They're so fast that they're gone before I realise they're there. In a hurry to get home, I guess.

  34. Racquel, I'm just thanking my lucky stars that I've graduated to a digital camera. With these views I would've spent a fortune in buying umpteen rolls of film and on developping/ printing if I were still using my old film camera.

  35. Thanks, Ana. I love that snowy sky that you posted in your blog. Very exotic ... for me ;)

  36. Beautiful Sunset pics :) There is nothing like a sunset over water. I can see that the Mumbai waters are beautiful at this time of the day!

  37. Asma, I have a feeling that you must be getting similar views in Dubai too, right?
You're so right about the sunset over water ... all my work slows down at that time of the day just so I can enjoy the spectacular show being put up by the sun and sea :)

  38. http://asmaahsan1974.wordpress.com/2008/12/20/dubai-sunset/

I posted a picture of sunset in Dubai on this link. You can see it there. :) Water is the best medium to take photographs as it reflects light perfectly.

  39. Thanks for the link, Asma. I totally agree with you about sunlight on water. It looks quite surreal at times, dont you think?
