December skies

The skies over Mumbai have been putting on the most spectacular shows these last few evenings. It's almost as if it is trying to make up for the haze of grey that has been covering it for most of the day. Around 6 p.m., the setting sun tears open the veil that is shrouding the city and... ta-dah!

Sometimes the sea joins in with a symphony of its own and the waters glitter and ripple in reflected glory.

No two days are the same. Sometimes the clouds paint the sky in designs of their own. Sometimes the sun wins through. And on and on they go, till the weary sun drops below the horizon in a last flash of brilliance. And as it slips, screaming defiance at the approaching Night, it paints the sea a brilliant hue and whispers, "Remember..."

  3. You bet, Chandramouli! But this goes way beyond amusement or even, Art. It makes you feel like gasping with awe. Imagine, after a very hum-drum day, you look out of the window and see ... This!

  8. Stunning photographs!
I have been to Mumbai several times and Delhi's my own city, having been born and brought up there. For this reason, I am, like most Indians, tempted to draw comparison between the two cities, and for me Mumbai wins hands down as besides other things Delhi will never have a sea-side. Your photographs have made me yearn for the Sea again.

  10. Now that moon is what I think of when I think of India. Exotic, very exotic.

  12. pts, thank you!

Gemma, you are a poet, aren't you! Yes, the colours swelling and billowing into each other did make think of symphonies :)

Thanks, Kallen! That photo was taken just as the sun was going to dip below the horizon. I think it was quite wrung out and ready for bed by then :)

You're so right, Babooshka! I think the sun keeps those colours just for a last minute "I'll show them!" gesture.

Green Thumb, thanks! You bet, the sea makes Mumbai so special! But then Delhi is pretty special too. I envy your spell of colder weather where you can grow so many more temperate plants. If I tried that, they would be fried in no time! And the sheer scale of history you find there is mind-boggling!
I'm a transplant to Mumbai myself but I've always lived in coastal places so I cant imagine living far from the sea. Some of my best Me time is spent gazing dreamily out at the sea.

NG, that's a great term made just for these December skies, I think. Truly glorious!
Sometimes I find myself just watching it in awe and remember the camera only when it is too late.
Oh well... tomorrow is still December.

  16. Oh, I love your sky!! I want to be where that sky is and experience it myself.

Great shots! "Wow" is all I can say.

  17. Tina, are you sure it isnt the overcrowded bazaars bursting at its seams with everything under the sun? ;) Just joking!
Yeah, the moon can put on quite a show too, especially when it's a full moon!
But I think you were referring to the last photo, am I right? That was actually the sun, much mellowed and ready to sleep, heading for the horizon. I should have made that more clear, sorry.

  18. Kim, dont you believe it! Every day seems to top the previous one in the grandeur of these sky-shows. But yes, I agree that I am very lucky to be able to look out of my window and see this.
Now if only some obliging termites would do something about that scrawny coconut palm growing in my neighbour's yard and getting in the way of all my photos... ;) (Just joking, okay? I happen to love trees... scrawny or otherwise)

  19. Trudi, thanks! What a nice thing to say. I'm sorry but I always get tongue-tied when someone pays me a compliment so... :) :) :)

  20. Quiet Paths, you're so right about the amazing colours! I am getting so frustrated because my point-and-shoot camera just cant replicate the actual colours.

  21. Michael, thanks! Glad you liked that last photo. I almost didnt add it because I thought that tree was slicing up the shot. But what do I know? I'm a total newbie when it comes to photography.

  24. Beautiful pictures Sunita. Lovely sun and clouds.

SUNITA thank you so much for the ID help, you are just brilliant.

You have earned the Golden Star Award for your great botanical knowledge, please pick it up at Tyra's Garden.

  25. Thank you, Sue. That's such a nice thing to say.

  26. Tyra, I'm so glad I could help. There wasnt much need for botanical knowledge though ... most of those plants are favourites in our Indian gardens.

I hope you're not going to take away my award because I said that. That's MY award now, thank you very much ;)

    (Seriously, I love that award!)

  27. No, not crowded bazaars at all. The last picture was my fave. I thought it was the moon. It is awesome. Thanks for telling me.

  28. Wait till you see those bazaars, Tina. They're really something else.
Yes, that did look like a rising full moon, didnt it?

  31. Magiceye, you must be seeing the same amazing show in your part of Mumbai.
Thank God for digital cameras. Or else I would have spent a fortune on photographic film, developping, printing... it's impossible to stop clicking these sunsets .

  32. Hi Tracy! Warm your chilled bones at this site ;)
Maybe I should start an online service for all my friends in shivery places... daily photos of tropical India to warm themselves till Spring rolls in. IF y'all will do the same for me and post photos of snow and ice when I'm sweating through our hot, hotter, miserable Summer. :)

  34. I know I shouldnt be claiming any credit, but thanks, Raji. But I totally agree with you about the 'beautiful' part.
